Usenet Explorer Quickstart: Downloading with NZBs

Page 8/9 of this article

Apart for looking yourself through millions of headers, nowadays there's an easier way to look for the things you want to download from binary Usenet newsgroups. There are many sites on the internet that will allow you to download, create or offer NZB files.

A NZB file is a XML-formatted file which uses a standardized way to store Message ID's. NZB has become very popular in a very short time because you won't need to download any headers anymore.

There are sites which will allow you access for free, and there are sites to which you have to subscribe and pay. Quality may vary, and so does the retention of ID's they store.
Many newsreader followed this new innovation, and can import NZB files. Some even have a integrated (payed) service within the program.

Of course UE can also use NZB files to download from Usenet. There are a few different way's to use NZB files, and you can even add NZB files if you are on a different location (as long as you have a connection with the Computer UE runs on).

Importing NZB files from your hard drive.

If you have a NZB file on your hard drive you can import it as follows:

Click 'import' on the menubar:
You will find three options:
1. Import headers: all headers inside the NZB file will be imported.
2. Import&download: downloading the files will start directly after the import.
3. Import&download&save: downloaded files will be saved to hard drive after completion.
The latter will be the most practical for general use.

Import Headers through the menubar:

Select the option you wish to use. The file dialog for opening files will appear. Only files with the extension .nzb will be shown. Look for the folder that contains the NZB file and click 'open'..

The 'special' group 'import' will be opened and the headers will be imported. If you did select option 2, downloading will start.

If you selected option 3, you will be asked where the downloaded articles should be saved.

Associate UE the the NZB file type.

When you do use NZB files a lot, it will be much easier to associate UE with the NZB file type. That way you will be able to simply double click any NZB file in explorer, and it will automatically be imported in UE.
The operation UE needs to perform after such a file has been imported is selected in the properties window from UE.
The properties window can be opened by pressing F5, or through the icon image op de UE toolbar.

Select the tab 'General' and look for the 'Import/Search' section.

If UE has not been associated NZB files, you check (1). At the dropdown box (2) you select the action UE needs to perform if you double click a NZB file. (3) controls the way imported files are marked upon import ('always mark new' will mark headers you import as 'new', even if you imported or downloaded them before!). Select 'OK' or 'Apply' to validate your changes.

Importing NZB files through Internet Explorer or Firefox

If you use a indexing service to create and download your NZB files, you can directly import them in UE, without the need to save them to disk first.
You will need to associate the NZB file type to UE first (see before). In Internet Explorer you choose 'open' instead of 'save''.

If you use Firefox, you select 'open with' en select UE as application.

How you can import NZB files into UE from a remote location will be explained in the Advanced section.
