The latest version of this program is version 1.7.1 which was released on May 7, 2007.Welcome to the tutorial for our very simple newsreader: GrabIt. This is an easy-to-use newsreader that is especially popular among beginners.
This tutorial is written for GrabIt v1.6.1, but can also be used for older versions. If you’re using an older version there will be slight differences in how the program is used, but nothing you won’t be able to cope with.
Before we start the tutorial, I will point out some of the advantages and disadvantages:
Advantages
- Free! (except the Usenet Search and Usenet Browser functions)
- Easy to use;
- Simple interface;
- Built-in (not for free) Grabit Usenet Search to locate posts on Usenet quickly without fetching headers.
Disadvantages
- Poor multiple server support;
- The processing of downloaded headers takes a long time, especially with large groups.
Issues that will be discussed in this tutorial:
- Configuration
- Adding servers and Usenet newsgroups
- Downloading headers and files
- GrabIt Search and NZB files
- Posting short messages into Usenet newsgroups
I won’t discuss installing GrabIt because this involves nothing more than selecting your installation directory and clicking ‘next’ a couple of times.
